JOSEMEYER

Sisters Isabelle and Celine Meyer have been at the helm of the ground-breaking Josmeyer estate since 2016 when they inherited the 25 hectares of prime Alsatian vineyard from their late father Jean. Now a fifth-generation family business, Domaine Josmeyer – incorporating the iconic slopes of AOC Grand Cru Brand and Hengst vineyard- was an early pioneer in biodynamic principles, officially recognised in 2000 but practitioners long before then.

Their wines more than validate the family conviction that “the pursuit of excellence in harmony with the earth” delivers optimal expression of both terroir and varietal character. Wines produced from the vines growing in the valley on alluvial soil are soft and voluptuous, whilst those from the calcareous and marl soils of the 360m high Hengst vineyard are rich and full-bodied, and those from the deep granite soil of the Grand Cru Brand vineyard are incisive and fine structured.

In the words of Jean Meyer, “A wine is like a pencil stroke” – and artistry is at the heart of these wines, not only in their creation but also in the hand-drawn labels that befit the domaine’s hand-crafted ethos.

Varietal: Pinot Blanc/Pinot Auxerrois
Alcohol: 12.0%
Residual sugar: 2 g/l
Oak-ageing: Unoaked

The nose is both delicate and expressive and remind the idea a spring garden in the North of Africa. There is some mandarin zest, some orange leaves notes which bring freshness and also cherry blossom notes. In the palate, we find again the expression of white flowers and citrus fruit that blend with fleshy side of the yellow peach.

The balance is nice and finish by salty notes and a fine bitterness which remind the strong terroir of Rotenberg.

The wine is perfect for aperitif, with fresh vegetables, aspergus, white meat or shrimps!

The nose of this Riesling remind an infusion of verbena and linden with some notes of citrus like orange and yellow grapefruit. It’s quite elegant !

It’s a frankly and spontaneous wine with a nice balance which finish on a fine acidity and a good length. It has both a friendly and easy character but also a nice deepness.

Fleshy and chewy in the mouth, with a hint of vanilla custard to the apple and sweet spice flavors. Finishes broad, spicy honeyed and off-dry (3,5 g/L r.s. and 5 g/L total acidity). Alsace is the only place in the world that can make Pinot Gris like this one, rich and fleshy but precise and pure at the same time.

Varietal: 100% Gewurztraminer
Alcohol: 14%
Residual Sugar: 10 g/l

With 7 g residual sugar, it’s a dry style Gewurztraminer which reminds the idea of spices markets from North Africa. You have the cardamom seed, the fresh coriander and the roses from Damas. The nose is full of scents and heady! In the mouth, the wine stay on its spicy character. The clove, the nutmeg, the licorice and the pepper bring a very nice line and an interesting aftertaste with a small bitterness and a nice freshness.

PINOT AUXERROIS ‘H’ VIEILLES VIGNES 2015

Varietal: 100% Pinot Auxerrois
Alcohol: 13%
Residual Sugar: 3 g/l
Oak-ageing: Unoaked

Bone dry, yet full, rich and nutty in character. The flavours don’t jump out of the glass, yet run deep in this complex white. Citrus, apple and mineral are the main flavour themes, with superb cut and fine length.

PINOT AUXERROIS ‘H’ VIEILLES VIGNES 2016

Luminous dark straw-green. Very intense mineral, ripe apple and pear aromas are complicated by a note of honey on a fresh nose that hints at a little lemony botrytis. Then very bright and juicy, offering a repeating mineral nuance that provides the ripe apple and pear flavors with real clarity and cut. The suave, tactile and slightly off-dry finish (5 g/L r.s. and 5g/L total acidity) is long and adds a very pretty rising note of nail polish, brought on by the noble rot (Céline Meyer could not remember how much noble rot had hit the grapes, but given the long growing season and late harvest, she thinks it is likely a little was present). The vines were planted at the end of the 1960s (two parcels are only about 50 meters apart in the heart of the hengst, a very famous Grand Cru that is the source of the “H” in the wine’s name).

RIESLING ‘LE DRAGON’ 2016

Varietal: 100% Riesling
Alcohol: 12.5%
Residual Sugar: 5 g/l
Oak-ageing: Unoaked
Closure: Natural cork

Downright piercing lemony, floral and crushed rock aromas on the enticing nose. Then deep and complex but still painfully young and folded onto itself, only hinting at pomaceous orchard and white stone fruit. Very vertical wine a long, precise, citrusy and mineral finish (the calcareous soils contribute to the citrus mouthfeel) that is bone-dry.

PINOT GRIS GRAND CRU BRAND 2015

Varietal: 100% Pinot Gris
Alcohol: 14.0%
Residual Sugar: 12 g.l
Oak-ageing: Unoaked
Closure: Natural Cork

Pinot Gris Grand Cru Brand opens with a very delicate and fresh bouquet of ripe apples and very precise smoky/stony flavors. The grapes are sourced in the lower and upper part of the cru but picked together. On the palate this is a very elegant and delicate, dry Pinot Gris with an intense finish and a stimulating salinity. The wine is very well concentrated but straight, fresh and firmly structured. Very good ageing potential.

RIESLING GRAND CRU HENGST 2015

Varietal: 100% Riesling
Alcohol: 12.5%
Residual Sugar: 3 g.l
Oak-ageing: Unoaked
Closure: Natural Cork

Gentle but aromatic notes of ripe pear have a welcome edge of lemon zest about them on the nose. On the palate the full force of the fruit becomes apparent. There are tropical overtones of wonderfully tart passion fruit while ripe tangy citrus holds sway with the pervasive freshness of tangerine and orange. This is intense, supremely aromatic, straight as an arrow and very concentrated. The finish is bold and dry with a long zesty echo. Gorgeous now but full of potential.
